The Rocket Classic has a pretty good case for being the least “filler week” filler week on the schedule right now.

According to the PGA TOUR’s official First Look published Monday, July 27, 2026, checked on Tuesday, July 28, there is just one more week after the Rocket Classic before the FedExCup Playoffs. The same preview says Detroit Golf Club will debut its $16 million renovation this week, turning the event into both a playoff squeeze point and a first proper look at a materially different course.

That is a lot more interesting than “post-major exhale” content.

The PGA TOUR straight-up calls this the penultimate event of the 2026 regular season.

The TOUR says Detroit Golf Club is now a par 70 at 7,328 yards, with the routing changed enough that Nos. 7 and 17 are now par 4s at 505 and 537 yards, respectively. It also says the course now has only two par 5s, the pond in front of the 14th green is gone and replaced by native grass, the bunker count has gone from 84 to 91, and the greens were restored to their original Donald Ross shapes under architect Tyler Rae.

That is not cosmetic cleanup.

That is a week where last year’s Detroit references only help so much.

The Field Has More Juice Than a Typical Late-July Stop

The same TOUR preview says:

• Cameron Young is back as a two-time winner in 2026
• defending champion Aldrich Potgieter returns trying to become the event’s first back-to-back winner
• Wyndham Clark arrives after a hot run that includes the U.S. Open title
• Chris Gotterup comes in with three wins in 2026
• Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth, and Brooks Koepka are all making their Rocket Classic debuts

That is a much healthier cast than the lazy calendar take would suggest.

The Weird Sponsor-Exemption Stuff Makes the Week Feel Even More 2026

The PGA TOUR preview also notes that Brad Dalke is making his TOUR debut on a sponsor exemption and that Joe Hooks, a Detroit native, is back after making his TOUR debut here in 2025.

That is the kind of mix this event should want:

• playoff pressure
• young-tour momentum
• course novelty
• and some local/oddball texture

It gives the tournament a shape beyond just “play golf, then go to Greensboro.”
